Political Communications: Keeping the Media and Public Focused on Issues

Stories about political scandal, infighting, strategy and private lives of government officials tend to steal air time or newsprint space from less entertaining stories about important issues or policy analysis.

Given the limited space available for media coverage and the limited attention span of today's audiences, communication specialists are hard- pressed to find ways to keep the public focused on substantive issues and discussion for their organization or their clients.

Join PRSA Hawaii with speaker John Hart who is an expert in the arena of political communications:

John Hart, Ph.D., is the assistant dean of the College of Communications for Hawaii Pacific University. Having previously worked at major radio stations and record companies on the U.S. mainland, Hart was a confidant of the late guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan for almost a decade. Hart is a former debate coach having coached nationally ranked teams and authored numerous articles and handbooks on debate theory and practice. He is the co-editor of Advanced Debate, called by the Cross Examination Debate Association "the primary text relied upon by scholars" in the discipline. Hart still serves as a media critic for local and Presidential debates and was invited to testify to the United States Senate and the National Parks Service regarding the public policy issues of the naming of national monuments.
