Contemporary Media Ethics: Making the Right Decisions in the Modern World
Featuring Mitch Land, Ph.D., Director, Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism

Mitch Land serves as director of the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism at the University of North Texas in Denton. He is also founder of the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference of the Southwest, which Dave Granger, editor of Esquire, calls, "the most significant gathering of writers in the country." Land’s ethics book, Contemporary Media Ethics, published by Marquette Books (2006) offers a new analytical model for analyzing complex ethical dilemmas in the media. Media ethicist Clifford Christians calls the book, "a genuine contribution to the field." The book has been nominated for the Clifford G. Christians Ethics Research Award for 2006, sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research.

Prior to joining the academic ranks in 1989, Land worked in media development for the Francophone countries of Africa for 15 years with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. His research has focused on the political role of television in Cote d’Ivoire and on the status of independent newspapers in Cameroon. He is a contributor to Merrill & DeBeer's Global Journalism and authored "Status of Media in French-Speaking West Africa," in D. H. Johnston, (Ed.) Encyclopedia of International Media and Communications, 2003. In 2002-2005, Land led the Mayborn Institute in helping Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique launch an undergraduate journalism program. The Institute offered journalism graduate courses in Maputo to accelerate training for future instructors in the new program.

Through arrangements made with Dr. Jim Whitfield, dean of the College of Communications at Hawaii Pacific University, Land is teaching summer classes at the University on newswriting and communication.
