Strategies for a Successful National Publicity Campaign
with Rob Kay
A former journalist with the San Francisco Chronicle Foreign Service,
Rob Kay will share his strategies for placement in prominent national
publications. Kay was also a regular contributor to USA Today,
Newsday, San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Chronicle, Arizona
Republic, San Jose Mercury, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune,
Seattle Times and the Philadelphia Enquirer. Since the 1980fs Kay
has worked as a public relations consultant with high technology and
real estate companies in Hawaii and on the U.S. Mainland. His clients
include Oceanic Time Warner, The Hawaii Science & Technology
Council, and the Entrepreneur's Foundation of Hawaii--a nonprofit
founded by John Dean, former CEO and Board Chairman of
Silicon Valley Bank.
A few of Kay's accomplishments in technology industry include:
1. Developed a national public relations program for Hawaii-based software developer
and real estate analyst Mike Sklarz of Fidelity National Financial. Resulting programming garnered
stories in the Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Business Week, Washington Post, USA Today,
Barron's, Newsday, Los Angeles Times and a number of other major dailies across the
nation.
2. Took a small company from Lincoln, Nebraska (Covalent Technologies) and helped
them set up shop in San Francisco. He orchestrated a promotional campaign that netted them
articles in Forbes, ABC News, Red Herring, CNET and other publications. The resulting
publicity helped Covalent secure $5 million in VC funding and launched the company.
3. Set up PR program for Silicon Valley-based open source software pioneer Cygnus Solutions
and got them national attention in Forbes and other publications. This helped position
the company for an acquisition by Red Hat, a major open source software firm.
